On August 9, 2009, Sonia Sotomayor
was sworn in the Supreme Court building as the first
Latina
Justice and
only the
third woman to hold the position. She
was
nominated
by President Obama in May of 2009 and was passed by the Senate on August 6 by a 68-31 vote. Sonia Sotomayor's story is significant because she is the first Hispanic to hold the position, and a woman. It shows that the U.S. government is beginning to include more of a variety of its people. Also, Sonia Sotomayor has an inspirational story; her father died when she was young. She worked hard in school and went on a full ride
scholarship to Princeton, where most of the students were male and very few Hispanics. She also went to Yale and eventually worked her way
up to a legal career and the Supreme Court spot.
